Thursday April 18, 2019 – President Uhuru Kenyatta has today issued a stern warning to millers against hiking prices of maize flour.
In a statement released after chairing a Cabinet meeting in State House, Nairobi, on Thursday, Uhuru warned millers against taking advantage of the ongoing drought situation to hike the price of maize flour.
Uhuru said stern action will be taken against those who hoard maize and other essential food items.
The Cabinet also noted that the drought situation in a number of Counties among them Turkana, Mandera, Garissa, Marsabit and Wajir has worsened from the Alert Stage to the Alarm Stage and assured the country that the Government has the situation under control.
Uhuru said him and his Cabinet will take all necessary measures to ensure prices of basic food commodities remain stable.
On Monday, this week some millers indicated that the price of a 2kg packet of flour will rise to Sh 130 due to drought.
Currently the retail price of a 2kg packet of Unga is Sh 90
