Tuesday April 9, 2019 – Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has announced that it will not participate in the upcoming Wajir West by-elections scheduled for April 25th.
Making the announcement on Tuesday, ODM’s Director of Elections, Junet Mohamed, said the party has decided not to field a candidate after consulting top Jubilee Party leaders.
He said the party’s top structure agreed to reciprocate Jubilee’s earlier decision to withdraw from the Migori, Ugenya and Embakasi South by-elections.
“The party has arrived at this decision following consultations with the top leadership of the Jubilee Party during which we agreed to reciprocate Jubilee’s earlier decision to withdraw from the Migori, Ugenya and Embakasi South by-elections,” he said.
In a statement to its members, Junet said just as Jubilee did in the three recent by-elections, ODM will not take sides in the contest in Wajir West.
“We wish victory to the best candidate,” he added.
The move comes barely a week after ODM suffered a humiliating defeat in Ugenya and Embakasi South by elections.
In Ugenya and Embakasi by elections, Deputy President William Ruto took credit for the win claiming that he assisted the candidates financially to beat ODM candidates.
