Bofu Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) Ahmed Salama Omar who was arrested in connection to drug trafficking was on Tuesday freed by a Mombasa court over lack of evidence.
According to Magistrate Edgar Kagoni, the prosecution did not prove beyond reasonable doubt why the defendant should continue being remanded.
This was after the prosecution had requested the court to detain Mr. Omar for three more days pending completion of investigations.
The court, however, rejected the request saying the accused had presented himself to the police prior, thereby giving them adequate time to conduct their probe.
Mr. Omar was among 18 others arrested on Monday after Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i launched a crackdown on drugs in Mombasa County.
42 Heroin sachets, 147 rolls of bhang as well as Ksh.608,000 in fake currency were recovered in the operation.
