has landed the best actress award at the Fespaco film festival in Burkina Faso

and audiences have acknowledged and commended Mugatsia for her efforts.
In 2018, the Kenya Films and Classifications
Board banned the film for allegedly promoting lesbianism – a move which divided
opinion across the showbiz industry.
The ban was however
temporarily lifted to enable the movie to be eligible for nominations in the
Oscars Academy awards.
Rafiki, the film
which rose Mugatsia to prominence, is a story about two young girls who fall in
love in a society which is seriously against same-sex relationships.
Congolese-Belgian actor Marc Zinga won the best actor award for his depiction
in the movie The Mercy of the Jungle, where he played a lost soldier in a
jungle during the war-ridden era at the Democratic Republic of Congo.
